Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
